PUNA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Two men have been charged with trespassing and theft after allegedly stealing avocados from a Puna orchard.

The theft happened Wednesday afternoon at an orchard off Highway 132 in Kapoho.

Police said the owner of the orchard confronted two men and a woman in a pickup truck on his property, and had blocked the truck from leaving before calling police.

The owner said he saw about 80 pounds of avocados in the bed of the truck.

The two men arrested were Max Mattos, 49, of Keaau, and Kawika Nobriga, 33, of Pahoa. They were charged with second-degree criminal trespass and second-degree theft. Their bail was set at $2,500 each.

A woman, 30-year-old Sabrina Jaeger of Pahoa, was arrested on a bench warrant and charged with contempt of court. She was released after posting $300 bail.

Mattos and Nobriga are being held at the Hilo police cell block, pending an initial court appearance Thursday.
