WAIPAHU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An 8-inch water main broke Friday morning, flooding a Waipahu neighborhood and causing a large sinkhole on Pupupuhi Street.

Cell phone video from neighbors show thousands of gallons of water pounding nearby apartments like a strong power hose.

"It was on the roof of this building, that's why I was just screaming, because the kids are in the house," said resident Leala Penitusi.

Penitusi called 911 and waited for Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews to shut off the line.

By the time that happened, apartment units had been flooded and water was racing down the street.

"I noticed the water streaming out my door," said resident Ariel Vares. "It was like a brown water."

Residents used buckets to empty the dirty water from their apartments and brooms to sweep up the debris.

Crews fixed the aging line about 10 p.m., restoring water to 24 customers.
