HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Frozen scallops imported from the Philippines are confirmed as the source of the state's ongoing Hepatitis A outbreak, according to laboratory tests by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The state Department of Health announced the findings on Thursday, saying Sea Port Bay Scallops (Wild Harvest, Raw Frozen) collected this month from the distributor tested positive for Hepatitis A. The statewide embargo on the product remains in place.

“This laboratory confirmation is important validation of our investigation findings,” said State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park in a news release. “We are also grateful to the public for their active role in adding critical pieces to solve the puzzle.”

The scallops were distributed by Koha Foods to Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and Kauai. A recent survey of Hawaii residents conducted by the Department of Health found that most of the 206 people who fell ill say they ate at the sushi chain in recent months, while only about 23 percent of the general population dined there.

All ten of the Genki Sushi restaurants on Oahu and the only location on Kauai were closed and ordered to sanitize from top-to-bottom after the connection was made earlier this week.
