HILO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Police are trying to determine the identity of a man whose body was found floating nearly a mile off shore of the Big Island on Tuesday afternoon.

The man was found shortly after 1 p.m., off of Honolii Beach Park. Fire and police crews were called to help by a boater who made the discovery.

"A passing fisherman was in the area and he actually, the body actually bumped into his boat," said Hawaii Police Department's Lt. Greg Esteban.

The man is described as caucasian, in his mid-30s and about 5'8" to 6 feet tall. He has a red goatee and red hair and was found wearing a brown shirt and brown shorts.

Police say it appears he had been in the water since at least the morning.

The body was brought to shore at the Wailoa River State Boat Ramp. An autopsy is pending to determine his identity and cause of death.
