HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A chart from Nieman Journalism Lab shows employment in information industries since 1990. The most striking line is the one showing a dramatic decline in newspaper employment. It’s half of what it was, as recently as 2001.

Please note that Internet information employment now exceeds newspaper employment. What you’re seeing is nothing less than a threat to the Republic, because newspapers were the basis of most original reporting. Radio and TV stations would cover pre-scheduled events, but otherwise they repeated the news that was broken by the newspapers, which employed more people investigating stories, or just taking the time to double check someone’s assertions before repeating them as fact.

The decline of newspapers is a serious matter, not because original reporting cannot be done by anyone else, but because it is not yet being done by anyone else to the same degree.
