SCHOFIELD BARRACKS (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Authorities have opened a first-degree arson investigation following a playground fire on base at Schofield Barracks on Sunday.

The U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii said federal firefighters responded to reports of the fire in the Kalakaua housing area around 5:50 p.m. Upon arrival, the playground was fully engulfed. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within two minutes.

According to Honolulu police, three males were playing by the jungle gym when one of them appeared to ignite a piece of newspaper. As two of the males walked away, they noticed the jungle gym on fire.

Police said the 14-year-old boy will face a first-degree arson charge.
