KAILUA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A San Diego man was seriously injured Sunday after falling on the Commando Trail on Maui, fire officials said.

Firefighters arrived to the trail around 10:40 a.m., where they found that the 30-year-old visitor had fallen about 30 feet from the top of a waterfall at the third pond above Hana Highway.

Officials said the man was hiking with a group of seven other people when he lost his footing and fell over the side, first bouncing off a rocky outcropping 20 feet down and then falling another 10 feet into the pond below.

The man had to be airlifted to a landing zone next to Hana Highway. Paramedics then transported him to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
