HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The head of the state Department of Human Services is stepping down at the end of the month, the governor announced Thursday.
In a news release, the governor said Director Rachael Wong is "taking some time off before pursuing other opportunities in the private sector where she can continue to be an advocate for DHS programs that contribute to the state's public health, education, employment and housing goals."
Deputy Director Pankaj Bhanot will be promoted to director, beginning Sept. 1. His appointment is subject to Senate approval.
Bhanot has been at DHS for 17 years, and is an attorney by training.
