HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A man in his 40's drowned in the Wailuku River area on the Big Island on Wednesday afternoon.

Responding personnel arrived at the scene locally known as 'Narnia' to find three people on the river bank who say they tried to rescue the man after he had difficulty swimming.

Their rescue attempt was unsuccessful as they had difficulty holding on to him.

Rescue crews searched for about an hour before finding the man in approximately 30-feet of water on the river bottom.
