KUNIA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Dozens of residents of Kunia Village celebrated their homecoming on Tuesday.
Plantation housing residents along with project officials marked the opening of 82 affordable units with the untying of a maile lei.
The first phase of the project isn't expected to be done until December, but residents are already seeing dramatic differences.
"They were falling a part, the paint was -- it's all different. Compared to what you see now, it's amazing," resident Walter Calizo said.
The federal government will help cut the costs for residents by paying the difference between market rates and rental prices.
At the end of the project, an estimated 200 housing units will be available for farm-workers.
