HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - An adult monk seal was spotted off Yokohama Beach Sunday with a one to two foot arrow protruding through its hind flipper.
The sighting has prompted National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials to ask the public for their help in finding the injured seal.
This seal is not one of the, roughly, 25 to 30 resident monk seals on Oahu identified by NOAA but is described as roughly 300 pounds.
NOAA officials say the arrow may have already fallen out leaving evident signs of trauma.
If spotted the public is asked not to approach or disturb the seal but instead to call the Hawaii Marine Mammal Alliance's hotline number at 808-220-7802.
The injured seal was reported to NOAA by a recreational diver that was in the area.
Volunteers and ocean safety will be searching all leeward coastal areas for the seal.
