The Conservation Council for Hawaii supports expanding the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. So it’s upset some people oppose it. But it’s really upset Kitty Simonds is coordinating that opposition. She heads the federally-funded Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council. Most attempts to deal with overfishing turn into fishermen versus scientists.

The Hawaii Institute of Astronomy at UH Manoa has decided to share with undergraduate students up to 16 nights of observing time a year on the Mauna Kea observatories. UH has 10 to 15 percent of observing time depending on which telescope. Sharing with students will give them experience, and the experience could help them land jobs after graduating.

Outrigger Enterprises PR director Nancy Daniels retires today. She is one of the most Akamai media relations people in the state. Her successor, from Joan Bennet Group, is Monica Salter.

Whenever we mention tsunami flood zones, someone asks me what officials are doing about. The Molokai Dispatch says, on Molokai they’re brainstorming how to move the Pukoo Fire Station – that’s on the east side – to higher ground – and at the same time make a little bigger, since they have only two people on duty at any given time and they’d rather it be four.
