WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) - Air conditioning is delayed for some hot schools while education officials push for lower prices.

The Maui News reports the Department of Education halted the process after bids came in six times higher than expected.

Department officials expected many more applicants and say fewer available workers during the construction boom pushed bids up.

Bids went out in May when Gov. David Ige signed legislation allotting $100 million to install air conditioning and implement measures to cool 1,000 classrooms before 2017.

High costs mean at least four schools on Maui will continue to wait for air conditioning to be installed.

An education department spokesman said another bid schedule has not been set.

Officials recently met with contractors to answer their questions and get feedback.
