WAILUKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 73-year-old man from Molokai died Wednesday after he was hit by a dirt bike in Wailuku, Maui police said.
The victim was identified as Charles Kaahanui of Kaunakakai, Molokai.
According to police, a Honda dirt bike – operated by 19-year-old Paula Miranda, of Hoolehua, Molokai – was traveling east on Kahawai Street around 2 p.m. Police said Miranda ignored the stop sign at the intersection and attempted to make a right turn onto Market Street. That's when she lost control of the bike, crossed the road, jumped the curb, crashed into Iao Bridge railing, and went over the railing and into the river.
The bike kept traveling along Market Street and struck Kaahanui, who was walking on the sidewalk.
Both individuals were taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center where Kaahanui was pronounced dead.
Miranda was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
It's not clear if speed, drugs and alcohol were factors.
This is Maui County's 10th traffic fatality in 2016 compared to 14 this time last year.
