HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A man has been sentenced to five years in prison for damaging a King Kamehameha statue and stealing a portion of its spear.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports a Hilo judge sentenced William Roy Carroll III on Tuesday. A jury previously found him guilty of theft and property damage.

Carroll has been jailed at Hawaii Community Correctional Center for nearly a year. He'll receive credit for that time served.

Circuit Judge Glenn Hara says Carroll vandalized an important cultural symbol.

The statue's spear was repaired after last year's vandalism. Investigators found the spear in overgrowth behind the statue. It had been forcibly detached.

At Carroll's trial in May, Deputy Public Defense Patrick Munoz argued the case against his client was built on incomplete, circumstantial evidence.
