'Bows picked to finish sixth in MWC West division

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

The University of Hawai'i football team was picked to finish sixth in the West Division of the Mountain West, which was announced Tuesday at the annual Media Days held at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
After coming off a winless MW campaign in 2015, the Rainbow Warriors received 35 points. Unanimous pick San Diego State (174) received all 29 first place votes and finished ahead of Nevada (129), San Jose State (122), Fresno State (76), UNLV (73), and UH.
For the third consecutive year, Boise State was picked to win the Mountain Division and received 27 of 29 first place votes and 172 points. Air Force was second (126) followed by Utah State (111), Colorado State (95), New Mexico (74), and Wyoming (31).
The two divisional winners will meet in the MW Championship Game on Dec. 3, 2016 at the home stadium of the divisional champion with the highest College Football Playoff Committee ranking.
Defending league champion Aztecs swept all three preseason player of the year awards. Running back Donnel Pumphrey was named Preseason MW Offensive Player of the Year, cornerback Damontae Kazee was picked Preseason MW Defensive Player of the Year and return specialist Rashaad Penny was selected as Preseason MW Special Teams Player of the Year.
This is the first time since 2010 that a MW institution has swept the preseason individual awards. No Rainbow Warriors were mentioned on the preseason all-conference team.
UH head coach Nick Rolovich, quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, and defensive back Daniel Lewis, Jr., are representing the Rainbow Warriors at the annual media days, which attract some 200 media members who cover the Mountain West.
