The Coast Guard started closing ports Friday night - the last ones reopened Sunday - Matson had most of its Saturday cargo discharged in time but one ship did wait in open seas until Sand Island reopened, and will be 24 hours late getting to Guam this week. Pasha's L.A. sailing for Sand Island arrived yesterday after the port reopened. It'll take a few days to catch up to neighbor island connections.

State school spending has at a compounded annual growth rate of less than 3% in 10 years, in line with most other state spending. But the growth rate on state-owned hospital spending is up almost 14%. Now you know why the state is spinning off the cash-hemorrhaging Maui Memorial Medical system.

Central Pacific Bank names a new vice president and legal counsel. Sara Coes comes from the local law firm of Damon Key Leong Kupchak Hastert, and she’s licensed to practice law here and in New York.

Kamehameha Schools has a director of Aina Engagement, including land-based education. It’s Brandi Beaudet. He’s former land manager for Parker Ranch.

The 57th annual Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament is coming soon, on the first several days of August. The event will be based at the King Kamehameha hotel at the north end of the Kona seawall.
