KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - SolarCity in partnership with the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) broke ground on a new solar energy project -- believed to be the first of its kind.
The new project consists of a solar array and Tesla battery system, which will store solar energy during the day, and feed it to the grid at night to reduce the amount of diesel power generation needed.
"This system turns solar power into a firm, reliable resource which represents a major development in Hawaii's mission to go 100% renewable energy by 2045," said Jon Yoshimura, SolarCity's director of government affairs in Hawaii.
The project is being built under a 20-year contract between SolarCity and KIUC. The finished project is planned to contribute about 5 percent of the electricity generated by renewables on Kauai.
