PUNALUU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Sudden, intense downpours brought by Tropical Storm Darby triggered flash floods across Oahu Sunday night, but the storm is not to blame for creating a giant sinkhole in Punaluu, officials say.
Images show Punaluu Valley Road off Kamehameha Highway split apart by the deep sinkhole.
Residents say they are unable to get in our out, except on foot. And they have been without water since the sinkhole opened up on Sunday.
The Board of Water Supply says the problem occurred when a pipe in the area burst before the severe weather picked up.
Repairs were completed around 6 a.m. Tuesday and water service was restored to the 24 affected customers.
