HAWAII KAI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Thousands of homes on Oahu may lose electricity overnight due to Tropical Storm Darby, Hawaiian Electric officials warned on Sunday.
Intense thunderstorms associated with Darby have already triggered intermittent outages for some customers, but Hawaiian Electric says power may go out completely for as many as 7,700 homes.
The storm knocked one of two 46kV lines that serves Hawaii Kai and Waimanalo. If the only remaining line is also impacted, the customers will lose power for an extended period.
"We would likely be unable to restore one or both of the transmission lines tonight. We would need to wait for daylight to make a complete damage assessment and safely do the repairs," said Ron Cox, Hawaiian Electric incident commander.
