HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - From Kolomona Ku
Kolomona began playing piano at the age of 4 and pursued classical music all the way throughout college. Over the years, he also learned how to play the saxophone, guitar, bass, ukulele, and drums.
It wasn't until the age of 18 that he starting diving into various genres of music including jazz, reggae, alternative, and electronic. Kolomona graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Music for Piano performance from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the fall of 2012.
Though Kolomona had his mind set on a music degree, the true learning came from stepping into the Hawaii music scene. After his high school band dispersed, he played at open mics in Honolulu until he landed a full time gig at the end of 2009 with up and coming island reggae band Kolohe Kai. For the next few years, Kolohe Kai achieved success with multiple #1 hits on the radio and headlined tours in Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia, Guam, and the west coast of the United States. In the summer of 2015, Kolohe Kai's third album 'Paradise' won a Na Hoku Hanohano award for Reggae Album of the Year.
