KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 65-year-old man died Wednesday after drifting off Mokulele Highway and crashing his truck, Maui officials said.
The victim was identified as Dennis Witt, of Kihei.
Police said Witt was driving his Ford pickup truck around 5:40 p.m. when he drifted off the freeway onto the shoulder and collided into a concrete bridge abutment. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Witt was not wearing a seat belt at the time.
It's not known if speed, drugs and alcohol are factors.
His cause of death is pending investigation.
This is Maui County's ninth traffic fatality this year compared to 13 this time last year.
