KAKAAKO, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A plan to build luxury high-rise towers where Ward Warehouse stands is becoming more of a reality.
The Howard Hughes Corporation applied for initial permits to move forward with the Gateway Towers project across from Kewalo Harbor. That also means the 40-year-old shopping center – home to dozens of small businesses -- would be torn down.
A spokesperson said timing of construction depends on the number of units sold. So far, more than 1,000 are under contract throughout the 60-acre Ward Village.
The Gateway Towers are designed to restore a freshwater spring that runs through the area and open the view to the ocean.
