Family of five displaced by house fire in Haiku

HAIKU, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The American Red Cross is assisting a family of five who lost everything in a house fire early Wednesday morning.

At 2:18 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire on Kauhikoa Road in Haiku after a neighbor reported a possible boat fire.

Makawao firefighters arrived at the scene to find a single-story residence fully engulfed in flames. All residents of the home were evacuated by the time fire crews arrived.

The fire was extinguished by 7:03 a.m.

While the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined, investigators are certain that the fire started in the carport. No evidence points to the fire being set intentionally.

The home was considered a total lost with damage estimates at $220,000 to the structure and $75,000 to its contents. Four cars and a shuttle bus parked outside the home received $11,500 in damages.

Two of the cars and the shuttle bus were completely destroyed.

The family is being assisted with permanent housing, food and clothing. They will be staying at a friend's house in the meantime.
