HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A word to the wise: Be extra mindful of pedestrian safety laws this summer.
The police are cracking down on drivers and walkers who violate pedestrian laws.
During a nine-day period earlier this month, Honolulu police issued 485 citations to pedestrians and 52 to drivers who broke pedestrian safety laws. Most of the pedestrian violations were for jaywalking and failing to obey traffic signals.
The enforcement push comes in the wake of a deadly several months on Oahu roads.
So far this year, 14 of the 29 traffic deaths on Oahu have been pedestrians. There were also four pedestrians critically injured.
"The Honolulu Police Department encourages everyone to drive, and walk with aloha and to please be aware of others we share the road with," a police spokeswoman said.
