JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii (AP) - A new commander is taking over as the leader of the Air Force in the Pacific.

Gen. Terrence O'Shaughnessy assumed command of Pacific Air Forces during a ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam on Tuesday.

O'Shaughnessy comes to the post from South Korea, where he was the deputy U.S. forces commander and the U.S. 7th Air Force commander.

Adm. Harry Harris of the Pacific Command told a crowd that O'Shaughnessy has the in-theater experience and the right touch needed for the job.

The 1986 Air Force Academy graduate previously served as the Pacific Command's director of operations. The fighter pilot has more than 3,000 hours in the F-16 Falcon.

Pacific Air Forces includes airmen and civilians stationed in Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Japan and South Korea.
