HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu Police Chief Louis Kealoha extended his condolences to the families of the officers killed in Dallas on Thursday.

"Although we are thousands of miles away, we grieve with you," he said, in an emailed statement about the ambush.

His statement continues:

"Losing one officer is heartbreaking. Losing five officers is unimaginable.  What happened in Dallas is a painful and personal reminder of how dangerous police work is.

"In the midst of these difficult times, I want to remind our officers to be safe in everything that they do.  I ask that the public continue to support our local law enforcement officers in their efforts to make Honolulu one of the safest cities in the nation.  Rest assured that the Honolulu Police Department is committed to protecting the safety and rights of all residents and visitors."

Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell also offered his thoughts and prayers to Dallas in the wake of Thursday's shooting.

"The ongoing violence across our country has to stop, whether it's against African-Americans, other minorities, or police officers," he said. "Honolulu stands in unity with Dallas and the officers who were killed and injured while providing security to peaceful protests."

His statement continues:

"Police officers share a common bond no matter where they serve, and like those in Dallas, the officers of the Honolulu Police Department risk their personal safety every day to keep us safe. There is no room for violence in a society that values liberty and freedom, and any grievance must be addressed through peaceful means. It’s my sincere hope that as Americans we can reflect on this tragedy to engage in meaningful dialogue and understanding to bring about positive change.”
