PUKALANI, MAUI (HAWAIINEWSNOW) -

Maui firefighters were kept busy on Wednesday as they responded to two brush fires just hours apart.

Makawao firefighters first responded to Alalani Street in Pukalani around 12:30 p.m. where a quarter acre brush fire was burning toward a gulch at the south end of the street.

The fire was extinguished by 1:15 p.m. The cause remains undetermined.

About five hours later, firefighters responded to a brush fire reported at Mokuhau Park in Happy Valley.

Crews arrived 11 minutes later to find a 20-square-foot fire in grass and brush between the Mokuahu Park basketball court and Iao Stream.

A 12-year-old girl that lives in the area was reported to have accidentally started the fire with a firework.

That fire was extinguished by 7 p.m.
