KEWALO BASIN, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Puddles of sewage on the roads have prompted a warning from state health officials: stay away.
The Health Department is urging people to steer clear of the Kewalo Basin Small Boat Harbor due to an ongoing sewage spill that started over the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
The mess was first discovered on Sunday, occasionally bubbling out of manhole covers by the Kewalo Basin restrooms near Ala Moana Boulevard. Sewage is now puddling on roads in the harbor area, and some of it is spilling into the water, officials say.
It's unknown exactly how much has spilled onto the roads or in the water.
Officials suspect the overflow was triggered by a blockage in the sewer line. The restrooms at Kewalo Basin Small Boat Harbor are now closed as crews work to fix the problem.
Warning signs are posted, and the Department of Health's Clean Water Branch will notify the public when the area is clear.
