HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Blood Bank of Hawaii is putting out an urgent call for O-positive and O-negative blood.
The bank said blood supplies are at critically low levels. Officials estimate they have less than a one-day supply of the types of blood.
Some 200 donors are needed Wednesday, the blood bank said.
"It's the perfect storm -- blood usage has been strong at hospitals, donor turnout is lower than normal, and blood centers across the mainland are facing the same issues so resource sharing is not available," said BBH President and CEO Kim-Anh Nguyen.
"We are appealing to the public to please come out and donate, especially for those with type O blood, over the next several weeks to help ensure we have blood on the shelves for Hawaii's patients."
