State Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement officers on Sunday impounded 10 off-road motorcycles and issued 46 criminal citations  -- cracking down on illegal dirt bike racing in Maui’s Kula Forest Reserve.

Illegal racing has become a growing issue in the reserve, posing danger to visitors and damaging natural resources.

Officers have been receiving complaints from hikers, hunters, and mountain bikers concerning illegal racing for quite some time.

“Hikers report having to jump off the trail due to a motorcyclist operating illegally,” said DOCARE Enforcement Chief Jason Redulla.

The officers cited one juvenile and nine adults -- each facing multiple charges.  The bikers allegedly accessed the reserve by trespassing through private property.
