A new submerged "trash skimmer" has been installed at Kewalo Harbor.

The skimmer works just like it sounds: It's used to collect plastics, debris, and oil in the marina.

The operator and manager of Kewalo Harbor says the device is stationed at the corner of the harbor so it can suck in trash and leaves from as far as 50 feet away.

The skimmer can also be relocated at any time, and it's now running around the clock.

"It's like a Dumpster for the water," said John Eveleth, harbor master at Kewalo Harbor.
