Hospitality Advisors counts hotel room sales weekly, and through last week the occupancy rates rose to Kauai 80, Oahu 88, Maui 82, Big Island 75 percent full. Maui room rates are mostly over $300 a night while the average for Oahu is $238. Kauai and Big Island are in the middle.

Hawaiian Airlines hires two designers, one Japanese, one Hawaiian, to work on new uniforms. Sig Zane and son Kuhao will work with Tesu and Mikiko Nishiyama, and both will work with a committee of Hawaiian Airlines employees. New uniforms could debut next year.

An estimated 150 million hot dogs will be eaten this Fourth of July weekend. But we actually eat more chicken than hot dogs on the long weekend. Total spending on food for Independence Day barbeques and what-not tops $6 billion. We also spend millions on flags, most of them made in China.
