LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

An unsanctioned 'floatilla' event on Maui this Sunday will be heavily monitored by the Department of Land and Natural Resources.

The 'Float Party,' which will be held in waters off of the Lahaina Yacht Club, was promoted this week after a flyer started circulating on Facebook.

But residents in the area were quick to condemn the event, fearing the aftermath would be similar to 'floatilla' events on Oahu that left beaches trashed.

The organizer of the event has since removed the post from Facebook but has not officially cancelled the event.

DLNR says there will be officer presence and a permit is needed for such an event.

The will allow people to use floats in the water but alcohol is strictly prohibited.
