Geek beat: Drones

Geek beat - Drone regulations, 3D printed drones and more drones

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Burt Lum and Ryan Ozawa join Dan Cooke for Geek Beat to talk about drones.

Congress asked FAA to integrate drones into our airspace 4 years ago and we're just starting to see some results. There are official rules to fly one under 55 pounds after you take a test to be certified. You can fly them for commercial uses now.

Should you buy or build? 3D printing has gotten so good that you can print your own drone. Iolani school 8th graders had their own project that required them to pick up water from the Ala Wai in order to analyze it. They decided not only to use a drone, but to design it and print it themselves. It worked!

Drone racing is getting hot. In Dubai, they had a million dollars in prizes. You fly through real space around obstacles and you have a first person view. It's an intense sport. There's a world race in Kualoa ranch coming up later this year.

Don't forget to tune into Ryan and Burt for Bytemarks Cafe tonight at 5pm on 89.3
