WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Volunteers filled dozens of bags with trash, removed shopping carts and other illegally dumped items under the Karsten Thot bridge in Wahiawa on Saturday.

Underneath this bridge has become a fixture for a long-standing homeless community.

"It's a wonderful reflection of the community that is interested, cares, is knowledgeable and knows about the homeless crisis we're facing and that community organizations like the Wahiawa, Mililani, North Shore community need to get involved and at the grassroots level, participate and make a difference in their own community and that's what we're seeing here today," said Rep. Marcus Oshiro.

Participants collected between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds of trash, filling two large containers.
