Suspect identified in Maui restaurant fire

MAALAEA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui police have identified the suspect in connection to a restaurant fire in Maalaea Thursday evening.

Police say Claude W. White entered the Oceanside Restaurant during business hours and started a fire to the rear of the building.

The 53-year-old male suspect was arrested for first degree arson and first degree terroristic threatening.

White was later released pending investigation.

All customers and staff members were safely evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Maui fire officials says damages to the building and its contents are estimated at $300,000.
