KALIHI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Police are changing the cause that killed a 38-year-old man Wednesday afternoon.

Initially, police said the man, Kyen Knowles, was killed in a freak accident after his car rolled over him. But on Thursday, they reclassified the case as an unattended death. The accident occurred shortly after 5 p.m. in a cramped neighborhood on Waterhouse Street between Gulick Avenue and Kopke Street.

Sources said the initial calls were that shots were fired. But when investigators arrived on scene, they said there was no evidence of a shooting. Officers told the media it was purely an accident. Rescue crews freed the man, but he was pronounced dead at 5:29 p.m.

At the time of the incident, police didn't suspect foul play and didn't even call out homicide detectives and left the investigation to the traffic division.

The medical examiner was also at the scene on Wednesday and the case was classified as a traffic accident. However, late Thursday afternoon, the Medical Examiner's office said there had been a new development in the case.
