Maui firefighters rescued an Australian visitor who fell about 50 feet while hiking the Waihou Springs Forest Reserve on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials said the 33-year-old man was hiking with three other friends on the Waihou Springs trail. He was walking along a steep ledge near the area known as the “Caves” when he lost his footing and fell.

Firefighters responded around 3:15 p.m. when they found the man at the bottom of a ravine about 20 minutes from the trailhead.

He was airlifted to a landing zone and later taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in serious but stable condition.
