HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Volunteers from 808 Cleanups began work on Wednesday to remove graffiti on the outside wall surrounding Iolani Palace.

Vandals tagged it just one month after a $1.5 million improvement project on the wall and fence.

The volunteers spent the day scrubbing and power washing the walls.

"We contacted Friends of Iolani Palace and we had helped them before and basically how we work as 808 clean-ups. We'll support any group and we work with DLNR to so we're a support network," said Michael Loftin, Executive Director of 808 Cleanups.

The volunteers also applied a special gel to help break down the paint until they come back on Thursday to finish the job.
