HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Just six months after Thomas "Tommy" Friel was named Chief of the DLNR Division of Conservation Resources (DOCARE), he's out of a job.

Hawaii News Now has learned that he was let go, and his last day is Monday, June 27.

He made headlines earlier this year and was widely criticized for telling lawmakers his division needed more guns because they deal with Muslims who could be terrorists.

Friel previously served as a conservation law enforcement officer with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for about three decades.
