Business Report: Monthly update on alternative measures of unemployment

Since unemployment has been falling, the inclusion of last summer means bigger numbers than if we measured today. Here are the unemployment number for 12 months through the end of the winter quarter.

U1 are for persons unemployed 15 weeks or longer. In Hawaii it's 1.4% while the U.S. average is 2.2%. U2 are for people who lost jobs plus people with temp jobs ending. In Hawaii it is at 1.5% while the national average is a point higher at 2.5%.

U3 is the official unemployment rate. Hawaii is at 3.5%, well below the national average of 5.1%.  U4 adds discouraged workers. In Hawaii, it's 3.9%, U.S. 5.5%. U5 adds marginally attached workers. Hawaii 4.9%, U.S. 6.2%. U6 factors in part-timers who want full-time. Hawaii 9.1%, U.S. 10.1%.
