Orange County, California -

After sailing for 16 days, three Hawaii sailors were rescued from their sinking boat off California less than 24 hours from their destination in Newport Beach.

They were delivering a 45-foot racing yacht called 'Locomotion' to its new owner when the boat hit something in the water, damaging the rudder.

The captain says water came rushing in and the boat began to sink.

A helicopter airlifted them off four hours later as the 'Locomotion went under.

"I literally cried in the helicopter I was gutted then, totally gutted. I couldn't have any words I couldn't say anything I just sat there and cried," said Lynn Silva, captain of the Locomotion.

In nearly 40 years of sailing, this is the first time Silva has ever needed a rescue.

No one was injured in the incident.
