Top seeds fall on third day of Manoa Cup

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The winner of the 108th Manoa Cup will not be a repeat champion.

Defending title holder Tyler Ota, the tournament's top seed, lost to Chaminade golfer Justin Taparra in the Round of 16 on Thursday (1-up) and bowed out of the contest before reaching the quarterfinals.

Taparra was strong at the start, winning two of the round's first three holes. Ota, looking to regain his footing, took three of the next four, including a two-stroke birdie on the par 3 fourth.

By the 10th, Taparra had again retaken the lead, one he would not relinquish despite dropping the 14th to Ota. The pairing then went stroke-for-stroke over the final four holes.

The tournament's second-seeded golfer, Shon Katahira, suffered a similar fate despite being 3-up through 4 holes. Former UH-Hilo golfer Isaac Jaffurs won 6 of the final 10 holes, indluding a birdie on the par-4 17th, to eliminate Katahira and move on to the quarterfinals.

The highest remaining seed after Thursday's action is Baldwin High School student Justin Ngan, who defeated Kolbe Irei (3 and 2) to move on to the next round.
