HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Pahoa man is in critical condition after he collapsed while being held in a police cell block on Wednesday.
Clarence Hatori, 38, turned himself in on Tuesday at the Hilo police station, where he was arrested in suspicion of robbery and charged with two counts of contempt of court.
Hatori collapsed in his cell Wednesday morning.
Fire Department rescue personnel responded and took him to Hilo Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.
He was released from police custody in connection with the robbery case due to his medical condition as the investigation continues.
Because the critical medical event occurred while Hatori was in police custody, the Criminal Investigations Division and the Office of Professional Standards are investigating.
