LIHUE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Warning signs are posted along a two-mile stretch of Kauai's southeastern shore after a surfer says he was bitten by a shark.
Wildlife officials say the encounter occurred at Kalapaki Beach, fronting the Marriott Hotel in Lihue, before 6 a.m. on Wednesday.
The surfer says the shark, which was about three-to-four feet long, bit him in the arm as he paddled about 30 yards off shore. Fortunately, he was able to drive himself to the hospital, where he was treated for a single puncture wound and released.
Officers with the Department of Land and Natural Resources are asking beachgoers to stay out of the water until at least noon on Thursday. There are no lifeguards at this stretch of shoreline.
