HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Developers of a proposed senior housing facility on the Big Island are looking to avoid a list of permit fees and requirements to help keep their project affordable.

West Hawaii Today reports that county officials will meet Wednesday to discuss Hualalai Health LLC's request for exemptions from fees associated with building code permits, excavation permits and inspections.

Planning Director Duane Kanuha says the developer will still need to comply with the requirements set by the permits, regardless of the outcome.

The $70 million project includes 96 assisted living residences and 35 apartments for employees. More than half the housing units will be considered affordable under state law.

At the meeting, Hualalai Health is also expected to address councilors' concerns about the involvement of local union labor in the project.
