MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A 41-year-old man had to be airlifted on Sunday after falling approximately 30 feet from a waterfall on the Bamboo Forest Trail off Hana Highway, the Maui Fire Department said.

Firefighters arrived at the trailhead around 1:55 p.m. and spoke to bystanders who said the man had a possible broken leg and was unable to walk. Crews then found the man at the base of the second waterfall where they confirmed that he could not walk out.

According to MFD, the Haiku man was with a female companion and was about to jump off the waterfall when he lost his footing and fell to the pond below, hitting a rock outcropping on the way down.

A helicopter airlifted him to a nearby pasture where paramedics treated his injuries. He was then taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
