KAHAKULOA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Fire crews responded to a report of an SUV that appeared to have gone over a cliff on Kahekili Highway in Kahakuloa, early Saturday morning.
Just before 2 a.m., firefighters arrived on scene to find a Nissan SUV on a flat ledge about 200 feet down a steep slope.
Witnesses who were parked at the lookout on the Kahului side of the gulch reported hearing the loud cracking sounds of branches snapping. Shortly before that, a vehicle passed them heading north in the Kahakuloa direction. They called for help after the vehicle's headlights failed to emerge on the other side of the gulch.
Crews rappelled down to assist the 33-year-old driver standing outside of the vehicle. He was the only occupant.
The man sustained minor scratches and appeared to be in good condition.
He was hauled back up the cliff and transferred to paramedics. He was checked out by medics but declined transport.
It is unknown how the man's vehicle went over the side of the cliff.
