KANEOHE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Some moviegoers in windward Oahu want answers after they claim they were bit by bugs at their local theater. Several bite victims have taken to social media to voice their concerns.
"They just lead all the way up my hand, onto my wrist and all the way up my arm," said Caitlin Cunningham, who says she was bitten more than 30 times while watching a movie Saturday night at Regal Windward Stadium 10.
"Halfway through the movie I was sitting there and I was scratching my right hand," Cunningham said. "I honestly didn't think anything of it."
She doesn't know what exactly bit her. After calling and complaining to theater officials, she's left without answers and uncontrollable itching.
"I was itching so bad that I couldn't sleep," Cunningham said. "I actually had to go to Longs Drugs and buy the Benadryl itch and Neosporin and Cortisone, all that."
But that didn't help. Eventually, she went to see a doctor.
"He (the doctor) said it's definitely not fleas," said Cunningham. "It's like some kind insect or a mite bite."
The same bites Howard Huihui claims he and his friends received as well, after watching a movie at the same theater Thursday night.
"I'm pretty frustrated no compensation was offered at all for any of my friends or me," Huihui said. "If there are bed bugs in my house, that's going to be quite a lot of money to get them out."
Naeole McFadden is a former employee at the movie theater. He says he's not surprised to hear about the bug bite allegations.
"When we were there, our job was just to clean the popcorn, clean sodas and sweep the floors," McFadden said. "Nothing to do with the chairs or anything like that."
McFadden eventually quit the job and started his own cleaning business.
Earlier this year, he performed a cleaning demonstration at the theater and offered to clean all the carpets and chairs, but McFadden says Regal Cinemas refused to move forward with the service.
"It (the chair) was really stiff, there was a lot of oil and a lot of dust inside of there, and we had to really hit it hard to get it clean," said McFadden.
"It's unfortunate this happened but we're still here and we want to help them."
Hawaii News Now reached out to Regal Cinemas on several occasions. A manager at Regal Windward Stadium 10 offered no comment on the bug bite allegations.
